Ammannia gracilis, often misidentified as Nesaea crassicaulis in the trade, has been a beloved choice among aquarium enthusiasts for years. Though true Ammannia crassicaulis, which turns yellowish-green to reddish underwater, is no longer commonly farmed, Ammannia gracilis continues to captivate with its striking colors and robust growth.
Origin and Natural Habitat: Native to the wetlands, riverbanks, and floodplains of West Africa (Senegambia), Ammannia gracilis thrives both above and below water. In its terrestrial form, it boasts green leaves, while its submerged form features leaves up to 12 cm long, with stunning brown-red tops and violet undersides.
Growth and Care: Ammannia gracilis, also known as Red Ammannia, is a demanding plant that requires ample light and a rich supply of macro- and micronutrients from the substrate. It prefers soft water but can thrive in medium-hard water with CO2 supplementation. This plant flourishes in temperatures above 24°C and can tolerate up to 32°C. For optimal growth, plant several stems of varying lengths apart from each other. Propagation is simple through stem-tip and side-shoot cuttings.
Aquascaping Uses: Red Ammannia is best showcased as a group in the mid-ground of larger aquariums, adding vibrant color and texture. It is particularly well-suited for creating "plant streets" in Dutch-style tanks. This versatile plant can also grow emersed, making it an excellent choice for open tanks where its light purple blossoms can be enjoyed under strong illumination.
