Grower's Notes

• A collector's crypt, not a first one. Bornean species are generally more particular than the Sri Lankan wendtii group, and this one is no exception. If you have not kept Cryptocoryne before, start with wendtii or beckettii.
• The color is the point, and it varies. Olive through rust-brown with a metallic cast, shifting with light and feeding. Expect the plant you receive to differ from the photograph — that variability is characteristic of the species, not a fault.
• Crypt melt is expected and is not failure. Tissue culture plantlets shed their emersed leaves as they convert to submersed growth. Leave the roots undisturbed — new leaves come from the crown within three to six weeks.
• Plant the crown at substrate level. Bury the roots and leave the growing point exposed. A buried crown rots from the center.
• Feed the roots and leave it alone. Crypts take almost everything from the substrate, and every replant restarts the melt cycle — costlier on an uncommon species than on a wendtii.
