Littorella uniflora looks like a fine grass carpet and behaves like nothing else in the hobby — it is a temperate plant from cool North American and European lake margins. Given water at the cooler end of the tropical range it forms a dense, low lawn by runner without ever growing tall.

Grower's Notes

• Temperature is the deciding factor. This is a cool-water species. Held at 65-75°F it spreads steadily; run consistently warm, above the upper end, and it thins and stalls no matter what else is right. It suits an unheated or lightly heated tank far better than a tropical community.
• Plant rosettes a few millimeters apart. Separate the culture into individual rosettes and set them close together. Each one throws runners outward, and tight initial spacing is what closes the carpet in months rather than a year.
• Feed the substrate. Littorella is a root feeder with an unusually deep root system for its size. Aquasoil or root tabs under the planting area matter more than water column dosing.
• Trim to keep it flat. Old leaves lengthen and lean over. Cutting the carpet back forces fresh short growth and stops the lower layer from being shaded out.
• It is not Lilaeopsis. The two look nearly identical and are often confused, but they are unrelated plants from different families. Littorella prefers cooler water; care advice written for Lilaeopsis will not transfer cleanly.
