Rounder leaves, warmer color. Rotala sp. 'Sunset' shifts from green through orange-red into purple depending on light and feeding — and the quickest way to tell it from its close relative Rotala ramosior 'Florida' is leaf shape: Sunset's leaves are noticeably rounder, Florida's more pointed.

Grower’s Notes

• Leaf shape is how you tell the ramosior forms apart. Sunset has rounder leaves; Florida has pointier ones. Once they're growing side by side there is no other reliable way to distinguish them — label each group when you plant.
• Under weak light it stays green. The orange and purple are a light response, so buying this for color means committing to the lighting.
• Trim the tops and replant them; cuttings color faster than the stumps regrow.
• Plant stems individually an inch apart. Bunched, the lower stems shade out and drop leaves.
• It arrives in emersed form and looks plain — judge the color after a few weeks of submerged growth.
