Substrate 101: Sand vs. Gravel vs. Aqua Soil for Planted Tanks

Substrate is easy to overlook when planning a tank — it's just what sits on the bottom, right? But it's also where root-feeding plants get most of their nutrition, which makes it one of the more consequential choices in the whole setup.

Gravel

Plain gravel is inert — it doesn't supply nutrients on its own, so root feeders depend entirely on root tabs pushed into it. It's fine for epiphyte-heavy tanks (Anubias, Java Fern) that don't root in substrate anyway, but it's extra maintenance for anything that feeds heavily through its roots.

Sand

Sand looks natural and works well for plants with fine root systems, like Dwarf Sagittaria or Vallisneria, but it compacts more than gravel and can trap gas pockets if it's not disturbed occasionally. Like gravel, it's nutrient-poor on its own and needs root tabs for heavy feeders.

Aqua Soil

Aqua soil is nutrient-rich from the start, which gives heavy root feeders like Amazon Sword a real head start without needing root tabs early on. It also tends to buffer water slightly softer and more acidic, which some plants and fish prefer. The tradeoff is cost and a shorter nutrient lifespan — most aqua soils need supplementing again after a year or so.

Matching Substrate to Your Plants

If your tank leans heavily on epiphytes tied to hardscape — Anubias, Java Fern, moss — substrate choice matters less, since those plants don't root in it at all. If you're planning on heavy root feeders like Amazon Sword or carpeting plants that spread through substrate, a nutrient-rich option (or a solid root tab routine) makes a real difference in growth speed.

A Good Starting Point

If you want to see the difference substrate makes firsthand, Amazon Sword is a great test plant — it's a heavy enough root feeder that you'll notice the difference between inert gravel and a nutrient-rich substrate within a few weeks.
