Want a carpet that actually works in a low-tech tank? Staurogyne repens is the one. Sturdy stems creep sideways into a dense green mat, it takes trimming without sulking, and it does all of that without CO₂ injection — which almost no other true carpet plant manages. This is the sterile Vitro Culture® format.

What You’ll Receive

One 4-inch sealed Vitro Culture® bag containing healthy Staurogyne repens plantlets — ready to rinse, acclimate, and plant in your aquarium.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Staurogyne Repens, also known as Brazilian Creeper
  • Scientific nameStaurogyne repens
  • Origin — Rio Cristalino, Brazil
  • Placement — Foreground to midground
  • Shipped size — Small tissue-cultured plantlets, roughly 1-2 in
  • Mature height — 2–4 in
  • Suits — 10 gallons and up
  • Growth rate — Medium

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner. Genuinely forgiving compared to other carpets
  • Light — Medium. More light means tighter, denser growth
  • CO₂ — Recommended, not required! This is the carpet for low-tech tanks
  • Water — 68–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Substrate — Required. Root and water column feeder
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Also grows emersed
  • Propagation — Cuttings — replant trimmed tops straight into the substrate

Grower’s Notes

  • Trim the tops early rather than waiting for height. Every cut forces side shoots, and that branching is what turns a row of stems into an actual carpet.
  • Plant the stems a couple of inches apart and let them creep together. Packed tight from day one, the inner stems shade each other and drop their lower leaves.
  • Replant the trimmings. Cut tops root readily in substrate, so a single cup fills a foreground over a couple of months at no extra cost.
  • Yellowing lower leaves usually means light isn't reaching the base — either the mat has thickened or a taller plant is shading it.
  • Rinse the gel off completely before planting or it clouds water and feeds algae in the first weeks.

Prefer rooted plants? See standard Staurogyne Repens, or the Bulk Pack for larger areas.

Want to go deeper? Read our complete Staurogyne Repens Care Guide.

Notes

  • Images are sample representations. Actual growth pattern and color may vary depending on light intensity, CO₂, and aquarium parameters. Some melting may occur during transition from tissue culture, followed by regrowth under stable care.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

Awesome Tissue Culture

This is one portion cup of S. Repens. I received it 17 days ago, and it's already reached the top of my container and can be trimmed. S. Repens purchased from Chain Pet store, has been "growing" for several months and is still the same size as when I purchased it. Same exact conditions, but the APF are 3 times as big already.

Wish I had done this a long time ago

I ordered a cup of S Repens tissue culture from APF a few weeks back and now having used tissue cultures I wish I had started using them years ago. I've had bad experiences in the past with plants introducing nasty pests and aggressively growing algae into tanks, and not having to worry about that took so much of the stress out of adding new plants. With the tissue culture it was as simple as planting the S Repens and watching them grow into beautiful healthy plants. The S Repens themselves arrived in great condition (I say this because it was during the winter time and I was a bit worried about the cold weather being an issue during shipping) and did not have any melting at all, in fact when I added them in the leaves were kind of folded down but by the next day they had visibly perked with the leaves extended to absorb the light. I love the way these plants look and I've already ordered another tissue culture from APF. I highly recommend both Aquarium Plants Factory and Staurogyne Repens.

The cup of Staurogyne Repens I got was very healthy and green. I planted it in a dry-start setup and it’s growing like crazy. I’ve never had it before despite its popularity and so far it’s been great.

They’re just beautiful as always. I don’t use Co2 so likely that’s why they didn’t spread as much as I would have liked, so happy to find them on sale. Thanks
