Few foreground plants create the natural, flowing look of Dwarf Hairgrass. Its fine, grass-like blades sway in current the way real meadow grass moves in wind, giving an aquascape a softness that carpet plants like Monte Carlo or Dwarf Baby Tears can't quite match.

This is the single most common point of confusion in the genus, so it's worth settling first. Almost all Dwarf Hairgrass sold in the aquarium trade as Eleocharis parvula is actually Eleocharis pusilla. True E. parvula is a brackish-water species and is not suited to freshwater aquariums — so if a plant is thriving submersed in your freshwater tank, it is almost certainly pusilla regardless of the label it shipped under.
The three forms you'll actually encounter in the hobby are:
Eleocharis spreads through underground runners rather than surface-creeping stems, which is why an established stand forms a genuinely dense, lawn-like mat rather than a patchy mosaic. It's also one of the few carpet plants available in several distinct size tiers, so you can match the variety to your tank depth instead of being locked into one look.
Requirements vary by variety, and this is where most failed carpets go wrong:
Under insufficient light, hairgrass of any variety stretches upward toward the light source instead of spreading sideways — tall, thin, uneven growth is the diagnostic sign of too little light, not too little fertilizer.

With medium-to-high light and CO2, expect visible runner spread within 2–3 weeks and a reasonably filled carpet in 6–8 weeks from dense initial planting. Without CO2 and under medium light, the same coverage typically takes 3–4 months. Hairgrass characteristically has a slow establishment period before runners accelerate, so a stalled-looking first few weeks is normal rather than a sign of failure.
Established hairgrass propagates itself through underground runners that send up new shoots a short distance from the parent tuft. To speed up filling a bare patch, gently separate a few blades with their attached roots from a dense area and replant them where coverage is thin.
Eleocharis sp. Mini Vitro Culture is the easiest way to start a true dense foreground carpet — it arrives pest-free and algae-free in a nutrient gel cup and divides cleanly into small planting tufts. For a taller, more forgiving carpet, Dwarf Hairgrass (Eleocharis pusilla) is the more low-tech-tolerant option. Both are grown hydroponically at our California greenhouse.
Growing tall and thin instead of carpeting: insufficient light. Increase intensity, move the planting away from shade cast by taller plants, and trim the tops to force lateral spread.
Yellowing or melting in the first two weeks: normal transplant response, especially with tissue-culture starts converting from emersed to submersed growth. Trim affected blades; new submersed growth follows.
Carpet spreading very slowly: often just the normal establishment lag. Confirm light is adequate, then trim the tops — trimming reliably accelerates runner production.
Detritus collecting in the mat: a dense carpet traps debris over time. Flush it gently with a turkey baster during water changes before trapped waste causes localized rot.
