Why Is My Aquarium Plant Melting, Yellowing, or Dying? A Troubleshooting Guide

Almost every aquarium plant problem gets called "melting" by worried beginners, but the causes — and the fixes — are actually pretty different depending on what's really happening. This is the troubleshooting reference to work through before assuming a plant is dying.

First: Is It Actually a Problem?

Some degree of leaf loss after purchase is normal for almost every plant in the hobby — it's a transplant response to new water chemistry, not a sign of poor health. Anubias, Cryptocoryne, Bucephalandra, and Vallisneria can all lose leaves in the first 2–4 weeks after planting while adjusting. The real question isn't whether you're seeing some melt, it's whether new growth is appearing to replace it.

Transplant Melt (Most Common)

What it looks like: leaves turning translucent, mushy, or yellow within days to a couple weeks of planting, often across multiple plants at once.

Why it happens: a shift from the grower's water parameters (or emersed growing conditions) to your tank's. This is especially common with Cryptocoryne, which is well known for "crypt melt" after transport. We cover the mechanics of this in depth in Why Aquarium Plants Melt After Planting.

What to do: nothing drastic. Leave the root system in place, keep parameters stable, and give it 2–4 weeks. Don't replant or discard unless the rhizome or crown itself has turned soft and dark — that's rot, not melt.

Rhizome or Crown Rot

What it looks like: the rhizome (Anubias, Bucephalandra, Java Fern) or crown (Cryptocoryne, Vallisneria) turns soft, dark, and mushy, usually with a foul smell.

Why it happens: almost always burying the growth point in substrate, where it can't get enough oxygen and begins to decay.

What to do: this one isn't recoverable once it's set in — trim away the rotten section back to firm, healthy tissue, and replant with the rhizome or crown fully exposed above the substrate line.

Nutrient Deficiency

What it looks like: yellowing between leaf veins, pale new growth, or holes developing in older leaves without any physical damage.

Why it happens: a shortage of iron, potassium, or nitrogen — common in tanks with no substrate fertilization and only light-demanding plants pulling nutrients from the water column.

What to do: add root tabs under rooting plants, or a balanced liquid fertilizer for a broader mixed layout. Confirm the pattern (which leaves, old vs. new) before dosing blindly, since different deficiencies show up differently.

Light Mismatch

What it looks like: leggy, stretched growth with wide gaps between leaves (too little light), or bleached, algae-covered leaves (too much light for the species).

Why it happens: a plant genuinely mismatched to the tank's lighting — this is the most common root cause behind red stem plants like Rotala staying green, or carpet plants growing upward instead of spreading.

Algae on Leaves

What it looks like: green, brown, or black fuzz or spots forming on leaf surfaces, most common on slow-growing plants like Java Fern, Anubias, and moss.

Why it happens: usually excess light duration or intensity combined with a nutrient imbalance, giving algae an edge over the plant itself.

What to do: reduce photoperiod first, improve water flow, and consider algae-eating shrimp or snails. Trimming heavily affected leaves is fine — new growth typically comes in clean once conditions are corrected.

When to Actually Worry

Give any newly planted tank 3–4 weeks before judging a plant as failed. The exception is rot at the rhizome or crown, which needs trimming immediately rather than waiting it out. Outside of that, most "dying" plants in a new tank are simply adjusting.
