Color on the underside, not the top. Aciotis acuminifolia grows deep green leaves backed with reddish-purple — so the plant reads green from above and flushes violet wherever a leaf turns or catches light from below. It is rare in the hobby, from tropical South America, and unrelated to anything else in a typical planted tank.

Grower’s Notes

• Position it so the undersides show. The purple is on the reverse of the leaf, so a plant viewed straight down looks simply green. Placed on a slope, over a drop, or where light rakes across it from the side, the color appears — this is a plant that rewards being placed deliberately rather than massed.
• It stays small at two to six inches, which makes it a foreground or low midground plant despite being a stem.
• Rinse the gel off completely and separate the plantlets before planting, spacing them out rather than planting as a clump.
• Soft, slightly acidic water and steady parameters produce the best color and branching.
• It grows well emersed, so it is a genuine option for a paludarium or an open-top riparium as well as a submerged tank.

• Due to differences in aquarium conditions, lighting intensity, nutrient availability, and CO₂ injection, coloration and growth patterns may vary from one setup to another. Tissue culture plants are grown emersed in sterile conditions and may require an acclimation period before transitioning into submerged growth.
