Aponogeton Ulvaceus

Aponogeton ulvaceus grows from a bulb, which means it arrives as a dormant tuber and turns into a two-foot spray of translucent, crinkled leaves within weeks. Nothing else in a planted tank moves in the current the way it does.

Grower's Notes

• Dormancy is normal and is not the plant dying. After several months of vigorous growth an ulvaceus will shed its leaves and rest. Leave the bulb in the substrate — or lift it into cool, damp storage for six to eight weeks — and it re-sprouts stronger than before.
• Plant the bulb shallow, pointed end up. Press it into the substrate so roughly the top third stays exposed. Fully buried bulbs rot; loose bulbs never anchor.
• It needs floor space, not just height. Mature leaves arch outward across a wide radius. In a tank under 20 gallons it will shade out everything around it.
• Feed the roots. The bulb draws on stored energy first, then depends entirely on what its roots can reach. Root tabs under the bulb are what carry it through a full growth cycle.
• Cut flower stalks unless you want seed. Flowering diverts energy from leaf production and shortens the growth phase before dormancy.
