The hairy Bacopa, marbled. Bacopa lanigera 'Variegata' keeps the soft hairs and slow, tidy growth of the species and adds cream-and-white variegation across the leaves. It stays compact, holds its shape without weekly trimming, and flowers purple when grown above water.

Grower's Notes

  • Slow growth is an advantage in a variegated plant. Fast variegated stems demand constant trimming to stop green growth taking over. This one moves slowly enough that you can spot and remove reverted stems before they dominate.
  • It can revert. Plain green shoots photosynthesize better and will gradually outcompete the marbled growth. Cut them out at the base as they appear.
  • The hairs are the giveaway. Run a stem between your fingers — no other Bacopa we stock has them, which makes this easy to identify even before the variegation develops.
  • Trim above a leaf pair and replant the tops. Building a group from cuttings is faster than waiting for one slow stem to fill a space.
  • For the plain green species, see Bacopa lanigera.
