Bucephalandra Achilles Green

Format: Rooted Potted

Price
$19.99

Achilles Green is one of the plainer greens in the Bucephalandra range — no metallic sheen, no color shift, just a dense clump of dark green leaves that holds its look under any light. Useful as the quiet plant that makes the flashier Buce varieties read as flashy.

What You'll Receive

  • Sold as a Bunched Plants or Potted Plants.
  • Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Achilles Green Buce
  • Scientific name — Bucephalandra sp. 'Achilles Green'
  • Also known as — Buce, Bucep
  • Origin — Borneo (genus range)
  • Placement — Foreground to midground, attached to hardscape
  • Mature height — 2-4 inches
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Low to medium. Too much light brings algae the plant is too slow to outgrow.
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Water — 72-82°F, pH 6.0-7.5
  • Substrate — None needed. Epiphyte; feeds from the water column.
  • Growth habit — Amphibious rhizome creeper; grows submersed or emersed
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower's Notes

  • A plain green Buce is the easiest one to keep alive. Iridescent and colored varieties disappoint when the light is wrong; this one looks the same in every corner of the tank, which makes it the sensible choice for a first Bucephalandra.
  • Never bury the rhizome. Tie or glue it to wood or rock and leave it exposed; buried rhizomes rot.
  • Farm-raised, not wild-collected. All the Bucephalandra we carry is farm-grown, and much of it is raised from tissue culture rather than collected from Borneo.
  • Give it flow. Bucephalandra are rheophytes from fast Borneo streams, and moderate current keeps the leaves clean of debris and algae.
  • Some leaf melt after shipping is normal. The rhizome survives and pushes new submersed leaves within a few weeks.

Love these!!! I bought 2 Achilles Green for $10/each during the Buy 2 Get 1 Free promotion and received three very healthy rhizomes with tons of leaves. Currently quarantining them but have seen no signs of trouble. They now have a little algae on the leaves in the photo, but that's only from my QT tank.

Great plant for my gravel tank.

My tank started off as a ornament tank. I gave some hardy plants a try with no substrate. This is one you can count on.
