Lalina carries subtle ripples across a deep green to bluish leaf, with a soft metallic sheen that shows under moderate light. It is one of the quieter iridescent varieties — texture first, shimmer second.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Lalina Buce
  • Scientific name — Bucephalandra sp. 'Lalina'
  • Also known as — Buce, Bucep
  • Origin — Borneo (genus range)
  • Placement — Foreground to midground, attached to hardscape
  • Mature height — 2-4 inches
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Low to medium. Too much light brings algae the plant is too slow to outgrow.
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Water — 72-82°F, pH 6.0-7.5
  • Substrate — None needed. Epiphyte; feeds from the water column.
  • Growth habit — Amphibious rhizome creeper; grows submersed or emersed
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower's Notes

  • The ripple is structural and permanent; the sheen is not. The rippled leaf surface stays the same under any lighting. The metallic shimmer only appears under moderate or full-spectrum light — in a dim tank you keep the texture and lose the shine.
  • Never bury the rhizome. Tie or glue it to wood or rock and leave it exposed; buried rhizomes rot.
  • Farm-raised, not wild-collected. All the Bucephalandra we carry is farm-grown, and much of it is raised from tissue culture rather than collected from Borneo.
  • New shoots appear along the rhizome without any intervention. Let it run for a year before dividing and you get a cluster rather than a single plant.
  • Give it flow. Bucephalandra are rheophytes from fast Borneo streams, and moderate current keeps the leaves clean of debris and algae.

Great plants

The two stems were healthy and have adapted well to the new aquarium.

Great plants!

Arrived healthy and green, I have a few planted in my aquascape and a couple floating in my shrimp tank and both seem to be doing well. Will likely plant the ones in the shrimp tank, just haven't gotten around to it yet!
