Bucephalandra Red Catherine

Format: 5 Bare-root (30+ Leaves)

Price
$54.99

Red Catherine is one of the darker Bucephalandra varieties we grow — narrow, elongated leaves that hold a red-to-bronze tone rather than the blue-green of the common Buce types. It stays small, grows slowly, and needs no substrate at all.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Red Catherine Buce
  • Scientific name — Bucephalandra sp. 'Red Catherine'
  • Also known as — Buce Red Catherine
  • Origin — Borneo (genus range)
  • Placement — Midground, attached to hardscape
  • Mature height — 3-5 inches
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Low to medium. Stronger light deepens the red and bronze tones; it will still grow under low light, just greener.
  • CO₂ — Not required. Improves growth rate and color if you already run it.
  • Water — 72-82°F, pH 6.0-7.5
  • Substrate — None needed. Epiphyte; feeds from the water column.
  • Growth habit — Amphibious rhizome creeper; grows submersed or emersed
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower's Notes

  • Never bury the rhizome. Tie or glue the horizontal rhizome to wood or rock and leave it exposed. Buried rhizomes rot.
  • Farm-raised, not wild-collected. All the Bucephalandra we carry is farm-grown, and much of it is raised from tissue culture rather than collected from Borneo.
  • Some leaf melt after shipping is normal. The rhizome survives it and pushes new submersed leaves within a few weeks — don't throw the plant away.
  • Red Catherine's color sits in the leaf itself rather than in a surface sheen, so it reads red across a wider range of viewing angles than the iridescent varieties.
  • Growth is slow enough that it rarely needs trimming. Plan the placement once and leave it.

Notes

Like most Bucephalandra, minor leaf melt may occur after introduction as the plant adjusts to new water parameters. This is normal and temporary — new submersed leaves regrow from the rhizome once the plant stabilizes.

Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

Beautiful plants and a generous portion

I was only gaurunteed one rhizome with 6+ leaves, and I received 4 rhizomes with at least 30. APF never fails me, and that’s why I never fail to buy more!
