Want a Crypt small enough for the foreground? Cryptocoryne lucens stays around 2–4 inches with slim, grass-like leaves — far narrower than the wendtii types most people start with — and spreads by runners into a low, dense group. It does that in low light, without CO₂. These are young plants grown in a controlled laboratory environment, so they arrive clean.

What You’ll Receive

  • Small Bare-root: 1 loose, small bare-root plant with 6+ leaves
  • Potted Plant: 1 plant with 6+ leaves, planted in rockwool inside a net pot
  • Young plants grown in a controlled laboratory environment (ex-vitro), offering a clean, pest-free start

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Crypt Lucens
  • Scientific name — Cryptocoryne lucens
  • Also known as — Cryptocoryne × willisii 'Lucens'
  • Origin — Sri Lanka
  • Placement — Foreground
  • Shipped size — Small plant, 6+ leaves
  • Mature height — 2–4 in
  • Suits — 5 gallons and up
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Low to medium
  • CO₂ — Not required
  • Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.5–7.5. Hard water suits it, as it does most Crypts
  • Substrate — Required. Root feeder — nutrient substrate or root tabs
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Also grows emersed
  • Propagation — Substrate runners

Grower’s Notes

  • Why two scientific names? Cryptocoryne lucens is treated by many botanists as part of the Cryptocoryne × willisii complex, so both names appear on the same plant. Nothing about the care changes.
  • This is the low-tech alternative to a carpet. It won't form a lawn like hairgrass, but it fills a foreground reliably where carpets fail.
  • Expect melt after planting. Crypts drop leaves on a change of conditions and rebuild from the roots over two to four weeks. Don't pull them.
  • Place it once. Every move triggers another melt.
  • Also available as sterile Cryptocoryne Lucens Vitro Culture if you want multiple plantlets in one bag.

Notes

  • Cryptocoryne species may experience temporary "crypt melt" when introduced to new environments. This is normal and the plant will regenerate with proper care and stable conditions.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

Customers praised these aquarium plants for arriving "healthy and lush" with excellent packaging. While shoppers noted they're "small" initially ("size of a penny"), they're appreciated as low-maintenance foreground plants that multiply well. Most received more plants than ordered. Growth is slow but steady, ideal for carpeting.

  • Healthy and lush!
  • They looked amazing when I received them even after spending about a week in the mail.
  • Got a great amount for what I paid and it just keeps multiplying!

Growing well

I only ordered 1 but was able to split it up in two, grown out a couple weeks in the pic. I wish I ordered more cuz it’s doing well. It’s not the fastest growing, but staying green and super cute in my low maintenance 6 gallon.

Nice little crypts

They look just like the picture. Not sure if I was supposed to separate them more but I like them and can't wait to watch them grow!

Nice quality but the size of a penny.

Literally the size of a penny. I bought two and they came in one pack and I was hoping to use to start a new tank, but this size isn't doing anything yet. Gonna take months until it starts using tank resources.

Nice

Nice little low maintenance foreground plant. They come super small so allow time to grow. Great deal though. My goal is to male a lawn out of these

Great little plants

They arrived safe and secure. They look great in my tank and are doing well. A little smaller than I expected but very healthy. For the price, they were a steal. I will definitely be buying from APF again.

Cute little plants

I got the buy 2get one free. So I bought 4 at such a great price. Can’t beat it. 1 of my clumps divided into 2 so ended up with seven clumps. I love it but not sure if one of my female bettas does. She uprooted it twice but hasn’t after the second time putting it back. She was obsessed with it for several hours. Will get more as soon as I figure out where it they will go.

Perfect

The grass all came healthy and I had many different little clumps to disperse sporadically. I'm very pleased with my order and I plan to do business here again very soon!

Really healthy bunches!

I'm really happy with this choice. I bought this same plant from another vendor and it came in immersed form. These, however, look to have been fully transitioned for a simply plug and play. Small and bright green. I'm bought a bunch to use this as a carpeting plant for my low tech tanks.

Nice little plant

Plants came in small, but size corresponds to those in the picture. All the plants I get from APF are all beautiful and healthy, and these are no exception. I recommend APF to anyone looking for a large selection of plants at excellent prices.
