Cryptocoryne Nurii

Patterned, not just colored. Cryptocoryne nurii var. raubensis 'Rosen Maiden' grows ruffled leaves in bronze and pink carrying tiger-striped or spotted markings — detail you look at closely, rather than a block of color seen across the tank. Uncommon in the trade and slow to bulk up.

Plant Profile

• Also known as — Cryptocoryne nurii var. raubensis 'Rosen Maiden'
• Placement — Foreground to midground
• Mature height — 3–5 in
• Growth rate — Slow

Care

• Difficulty — Intermediate

• CO₂ — Not required
• Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.5–7.5. Hard water suits it, as it does most Crypts
• Substrate — Required. Root feeder — nutrient substrate or root tabs
• Growth habit — Amphibious. Also grows emersed
• Propagation — Substrate runners

Grower’s Notes

• More light is not better here. Unlike red stem plants, nurii's pattern shows best under low to moderate light — strong light washes the bronze and pink out. Put it in a shaded midground, not under the brightest part of the tank.
• Plant the crown at substrate level, never buried. Buried crowns rot.
• Expect melt after planting. Crypts drop their leaves on a change of conditions and rebuild from the roots over two to four weeks. Leave them alone.
• Place it once. Every move triggers another melt, and this species is slow to recover.
• Feed at the roots — root tabs under the crown do more than any liquid dosing.
