Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Brown' is the crypt most planted tanks start with and most keep. Long, narrow, wavy-edged leaves in chocolate to reddish-brown, growing in low light with no CO₂ and no fuss. This is the sterile tissue culture version, so no snails come with it.

Grower's Notes
- Crypt melt is expected and is not failure. Tissue culture plantlets shed their emersed leaves as they convert to submersed growth. Leave the roots undisturbed — new leaves come from the crown within three to six weeks.
- Plant the crown at substrate level. Bury the roots and leave the growing point exposed. A buried crown rots from the center and a slow plant does not recover.
- Feed the roots. Crypts take almost everything from the substrate. Root tabs or aquasoil produce the broad wavy leaves; inert sand with liquid dosing gives short pale ones.
- Light controls the brown. In low light the leaves lean green; under medium light the chocolate and reddish tones deepen. It grows either way — the color is the variable.
- Stop moving it. Every replant restarts the melt cycle. Choose the position before planting and let the runners fill in around it.

I am helping my mom start a new tank, a 15 gallon column. I ordered these as the mid ground plant. I've ordered a cup culture before and it didn't come with very many plants. This one tho had over 22! I was so surprised! I could have kept breaking them down into smaller individual plants but 1) we didn't need 22 haha and 2) some of them looked better left alone as a small cluster of 2 or 3. They were all so leafy and beautiful. Once I opened the cup I couldn't close it again bc the leaves were just bursting out of it. We ended up using 13 in her tank and I brought home thr rest to put in mine. Once you calculate how much each plant costs it came down to about 60 cents per plant, per beautiful well rooted leafy plant! What a deal! I will 100% be ordering from here again

Recieved the culture with a stong root system. It has a beautiful color that contrats well in the aquarium. I read that a lot of people experience crypto melt but the culture i received is doing well and hasnt showed ant signs of melt.

The tissue culture I got was full of little plants but they were all density packed and stuck together therefore I was unable to separate the plants, instead I had to just plant the whole clump together

Great question! Since this is a vitro (tissue culture) plant, it comes as small individual plantlets/rosettes with tiny root systems attached to a jelly-like growth medium - there isn't a long stem to bury. You'll gently rinse off the gel, separate the plantlets, and plant each little rosette by its base into your substrate so the roots are covered and the crown sits just above the surface.
