$9.99

Deep reddish-brown to olive leaves with rippled edges, on a tight compact rosette. Cryptocoryne yujii is an uncommon species that brings darker, earthier tone to a foreground than the usual wendtii forms — and it is more particular than they are. This is the sterile Vitro Culture® format.

What You'll Receive

One 4-inch sealed Vitro Culture® bag containing a healthy portion of Cryptocoryne yujii, ready to rinse, divide, and plant in your aquascape.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Yujii Crypt, also known as Crypt Yujii
  • Scientific name — Cryptocoryne yujii
  • Origin — Southeast Asia
  • Placement — Foreground to midground
  • Mature height — 3-5 inches
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate
  • Light — Low to medium. Brighter light deepens the color but also invites algae on slow leaves.
  • CO₂ — Not required, though it strengthens growth
  • Water — 72-82°F, pH 6.5-7.5
  • Substrate — Required. Root feeder — nutrient substrate or root tabs under the crown.
  • Growth habit — Amphibious rosette; also grows emersed
  • Propagation — Runners

Grower's Notes

  • Not a first crypt. Yujii is less forgiving than wendtii or beckettii and slower to settle. If you have not kept Cryptocoryne before, start with one of those and come to this once your tank is stable.
  • Crypt melt is expected and is not failure. Tissue culture plantlets shed their emersed leaves as they convert to submersed growth. Leave the roots undisturbed — new leaves come from the crown within three to six weeks.
  • Plant the crown at substrate level. Bury the roots and leave the growing point exposed. A buried crown rots from the center.
  • Feed the roots. Crypts take almost everything from the substrate. Root tabs or aquasoil produce the thick, well-colored leaves; inert sand with liquid dosing gives short pale ones.
  • Stop moving it. Every replant restarts the melt cycle, and on a slower species each cycle costs more.
