A small, undemanding sword. Echinodorus ascherianus stays around 6 to 10 inches with slender green leaves on a neat rosette — which makes it one of the few swords that genuinely fits a 10-gallon tank rather than dominating it.

Grower's Notes

• The size is the selling point. Most swords need a 20-gallon minimum before they stop looking oversized. Ascherianus holds 6-10 inches, so it gives you the sword rosette shape in a tank where an Amazon Sword would fill the whole back wall.
• It does not spread by runners. Like every Echinodorus, it propagates by throwing a floral stalk that carries plantlets along its length — not by sending shoots under the substrate. Leave each plantlet attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.
• Feed it at the roots. Swords take almost everything from the substrate. Root tabs or aquasoil under the crown; liquid dosing alone gives small pale leaves regardless of lighting.
• Plant the crown at substrate level, never below. Cover the roots and leave the growing point exposed — a buried crown rots from the center.
• Expect the first leaves to melt as it converts from emersed nursery growth. The second flush is the submerged form — judge the plant on that.
