Echinodorus Gabrielii

Format: Rooted Bunched

Echinodorus gabrielii is a medium-sized sword — narrow, upright leaves in fresh green that stay tidier than the broad-leaved Amazon types without being a small plant. Planted as a group it reads as a soft green screen; planted alone in a mid-sized tank it works as the centerpiece.

Grower's Notes

  • Plan for a medium sword, not a small one. At 10 to 16 inches it needs a tank with height — 20 gallons upward. It is tidier than an Amazon Sword because the leaves are narrower, not because the plant is smaller.
  • Root tabs are not optional. Like every Echinodorus this is a heavy root feeder — it builds a large root mass and takes almost everything from the substrate. Liquid dosing alone gives small pale leaves no matter how good the lighting is.
  • Never bury the crown. Cover the roots and leave the growing point at substrate level. A buried crown rots from the center and does not recover.
  • Narrow leaves change how you use it. Broad-leaved swords shade everything around them. Gabrielii's slimmer upright foliage lets light through, so it can sit closer to other plants without smothering them.
  • Expect the first leaves to melt as it converts from emersed nursery growth. The second flush is the submerged form — judge the plant on that.
