Echinodorus Green Chameleon

It arrives light green and does not stay that way. Echinodorus 'Green Chameleon' — a cross between 'Simply Red' and a green parent — starts with slightly wavy pale green blades and develops olive-to-wine-red variegation over the following weeks as it settles into submerged growth.

Grower's Notes

• Give it weeks, not days. The name describes a change that happens over several weeks of submerged growth, not on arrival. Early leaves are pale green and that is the plant working normally — judge it on the third or fourth flush.
• Light sets the color, substrate sets the size. Without decent light it stays green; without root feeding it stays small. Those are two separate levers and people usually pull only one.
• Plant the crown at substrate level, never below. Cover the roots and leave the growing point exposed. A buried crown rots from the center.
• It propagates from floral stalks, not runners. A settled plant sends up a stalk carrying plantlets. Leave each attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.
• Expect the first leaves to melt. These are grown emersed, and emersed foliage dies back after planting. The second flush is the one that shows the variegation.
