Echinodorus horizontalis mini is a compact variety of the Echinodorus horizontalis sword plant. It is a smaller version that is well-suited for smaller aquariums or as a foreground plant in larger setups. Like its larger counterpart, E. horizontalis mini originates from the Amazon region of South America, specifically the shaded areas of marsh woods and temporarily flooded forests.
This plant has similar characteristics to E. horizontalis, with its horizontally growing leaf blades that are longish-oval in shape. The leaves have a heart-shaped base and an acute tip, and they display transparent grid-like patterns within them. The color of the leaves is typically a light to medium green, and new leaves may have a reddish-brown tint.
Echinodorus horizontalis mini has a relatively slow growth rate, reaching a height of 15 to 20 cm or maximally 35 cm in the aquarium. It forms a compact rosette of leaves, which can spread to a width of 30 to 50 cm over time. This makes it an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a smaller plant that won't overshadow the rest of the tank.
To ensure the healthy growth of E. horizontalis mini, it requires a well-lit environment in the aquarium. It prefers slightly acidic water conditions, along with a good supply of CO2 and a substrate rich in nutrients. Iron deficiency can lead to chlorosis, so it's important to provide adequate iron supplementation if needed.
With its compact size and attractive appearance, Echinodorus horizontalis mini adds a touch of elegance to any aquascape. Whether used as a foreground plant or as part of a larger arrangement, it brings a vibrant green presence to the underwater environment.
