Burgundy on a compact sword. Echinodorus 'Kleiner Bar' — a cross of E. barthii and E. uruguayensis — carries broad, slightly ruffled leaves that run deep green through reddish-brown to burgundy, on a rosette small enough for a 10-gallon. Grower's Notes

• A red sword for a small tank. Most colored swords — Red Rubin, Horemanii Red, Red Flame — want 20 gallons and up. Kleiner Bar holds 6-10 inches, so it brings burgundy into a 10-gallon where those would overwhelm the layout.
• Plantlets arrive green. Tissue culture stock is grown for growth rather than pigment. The red develops under your own lighting over the first month or two — a green bag on day one is normal.
• Feed the roots or lose the color. Swords take almost everything from the substrate. Root tabs or aquasoil under each crown are what hold the burgundy; in inert gravel it stays green and small.
• Plant each crown at substrate level, never below, and space the plantlets rather than clustering them — planted as a clump they shade each other and the inner ones fail.
• It propagates from floral stalks, not runners. A settled plant sends up a stalk carrying plantlets. Leave each attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.
