Echinodorus Martii

A sword with texture instead of just size. Echinodorus martii grows broad, arching leaves with deeply ruffled edges that catch light along every wave — where a standard Amazon Sword gives you a smooth green fountain, this gives you a crinkled one. It grows large, so it wants a tank with room.

Grower's Notes

• Give it space before you buy it. Mature leaves arch wide as well as tall, so one plant occupies a lot of a 20-gallon tank. In a nano it will simply outgrow the glass.
• Feed at the roots. Swords take most of their nutrition from the substrate — root tabs under the crown do more than any liquid dosing.
• Plant the crown at substrate level. Burying it rots the plant.
• Expect the first leaves to melt as it converts from emersed nursery growth. The second flush is the ruffled submerged form.
• It propagates from flower stalks, not runners. A mature plant sends up an inflorescence carrying plantlets along its length; let each root, then cut it free and plant it separately.

• This plant grows large and is best suited for medium to large aquariums. Older leaves may melt back during transition; new growth will adapt to aquarium conditions.
