A wide, low rosette rather than a tall one. Echinodorus muricatus spreads outward into a broad spray of medium-green, slightly translucent leaves on short stalks — a sword that fills horizontal space in a large tank instead of reaching for the surface.

Grower's Notes

• It spreads sideways, so budget floor space not height. Short leaf stalks and a wide rosette mean this plant occupies a large footprint at moderate height. Give it a clear radius — crowded against stem plants, the outer leaves shade out and yellow off.
• Broad flat leaves suit cichlid tanks. Angelfish, discus and other cichlids readily spawn on wide sword leaves, and this one offers plenty of surface. The leathery foliage also stands up to their attention better than soft stem plants.
• Feed it at the roots. Swords take almost everything from the substrate. Liquid dosing alone gives small pale leaves regardless of lighting.
• Plant the crown at substrate level, never below. Cover the roots and leave the growing point exposed — a buried crown rots from the center.
• It propagates from floral stalks, not runners. A settled plant sends up a stalk carrying plantlets. Leave each attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.
