Echinodorus Red Flame

Red without a red stem plant. Echinodorus 'Red Flame' carries broad green leaves scattered with bold red speckling and mottling — color that arrives as pattern rather than a solid block, and on a sturdy rosette plant that needs no trimming regime to keep it. Where red stems demand constant topping, a sword just sits there and holds the color.

Grower's Notes

• Feed it at the roots or don't bother. Swords pull most of their nutrition from the substrate. Liquid dosing alone gives you a pale, stalled plant; root tabs under the crown give you the speckling.
• Expect the first leaves to melt. Nursery plants grow emersed, and the emersed leaves die back after planting. The second flush is the one that shows the pattern.
• Plant the crown at substrate level. Burying it rots the plant.
• It propagates from flower stalks, not runners. A mature plant sends up an inflorescence carrying plantlets along its length. Let each root and grow three or four leaves, then cut it free and plant it separately.
• Give it room. At 10–16 inches with broad leaves, one plant will shade a surprising area, so treat it as a focal point rather than a filler.
