Care

• Difficulty — Intermediate

Grower's Notes

• Red costs more than green does. This is not a low-tech plant in the way a green sword is. The color needs light, the size needs root feeding, and thin conditions give you a small brownish plant rather than a red centerpiece. Budget for substrate nutrition before you buy it.
• New leaves come in reddest. Older foliage darkens toward bronze and green as it ages — that is normal, not decline. Judge the plant on what it is currently pushing from the crown.
• It does not spread by runners. Swords propagate by throwing a tall floral stalk carrying plantlets. Leave each attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.
• Give it three inches of substrate depth, crown at the surface and never below. The root mass is substantial and a shallow bed stunts it.
• Expect a transition. Grown emersed, so some arriving leaves die back as it converts to submerged growth. New leaves follow from the crown, and those are the ones that show the color.
