  • Difficulty — Beginner

  • Growth habit — Amphibious rosette
  • Propagation — Runners

Grower's Notes

  • Leave the runners attached until the daughter roots. Each runner sets a new rosette a few inches out. Cutting it free early stalls both plants; once it has its own roots it can be lifted and moved anywhere.
  • Broader blades than the other chain swords. If Tenellum has looked too grassy or too fine in your layout, this is the same habit at a heavier leaf — it reads as a plant rather than as turf.
  • Feed the roots, not the water. Chain swords take most of their nutrition from the substrate. Root tabs under the planting area matter far more than liquid dosing.
  • Height depends on light. Under medium light it stays low and spreads. In weak light it stretches taller and thinner reaching for the surface — the plant is fine, it is just growing to a different shape.
  • Thin it once a year. Left alone the rosettes crowd and the middle of the patch goes bare. Pulling every second plant and replanting it keeps the stand even.
