Hygrophila corymbosa is one of the fastest, most forgiving background plants in the hobby. The variegated form keeps all of that and adds broad leaves marbled in cream, yellow and white — rare-looking foliage on a plant that does not demand a high-tech tank to keep it.

Grower's Notes

• Variegated does not mean difficult here. Corymbosa is vigorous enough to carry the loss of chlorophyll without slowing down. It grows at the same beginner-friendly pace as the plain green form — the marbling costs you nothing in difficulty.
• Solid green shoots will appear. Any variegated plant can revert. When a stem starts producing fully green leaves, cut it out at the base — reverted growth is more efficient and will slowly dominate the group if left alone.
• It grows fast, so plan on trimming. Ten to twenty inches arrives quickly. Topping the stems and replanting the cuttings keeps the stand at the height you want and doubles your plant count each time.
• Old lower leaves shade out. A dense background group loses its bottom leaves as the tops fill in. Trimming from above and replanting fresh tops is easier than trying to nurse the old bases back.
• Emersed stock changes leaf shape. Stems grown out of water arrive thick and firm. The first submersed leaves are thinner and show the variegation more clearly, so judge the pattern on new growth.

Notes

• Aquarium plants are living organisms and naturally vary in size, shape, coloration, and fullness. Most Hygrophila Corymbosa 'Variegated' plants are grown emersed prior to shipment and may undergo a normal transition period when introduced to submerged aquarium conditions. Some leaf loss or melting may occur as the plant adapts and develops new aquatic growth.
