Hygrophila Odora

Pinnatifida's structure, in plain green. Hygrophila odora is a West African stem plant with deeply lobed leaves — narrower and more refined than Water Wisteria, and shaped much like Hygrophila pinnatifida but staying bright green rather than turning brown-red. Grown emersed it does something almost no other aquarium plant does: the foliage releases a scent when touched.

Grower's Notes

• It is the green answer to pinnatifida. Hygrophila pinnatifida gives the same bold lobed silhouette but browns and reddens under strong light. If you want that architecture in a layout built on greens, odora is the plant — same shape, no color clash.
• The scent only happens above water. Grown emersed in a paludarium or riparium the leaves broaden, soften and release an aroma when brushed. Submerged, that trait disappears entirely.
• Compared with Water Wisteria the leaves are noticeably narrower and more sharply cut, which reads as structure rather than froth.
• Feed the substrate. Leaf division and stem strength both fall away in inert gravel.
• Trim and replant the tops. It branches from below the cut, so topping builds a fuller group.
