Hygrophila odora, also known as Hygrophila sp. 'Guinea' or Hygrophila sp. 'Afrika', is a remarkable and rare aquatic plant highly sought after by aquascaping enthusiasts. Native to Western Africa, particularly regions such as Guinea, Liberia, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, this plant is renowned for its distinctive appearance and demanding care requirements.

Hygrophila Odora Vitro Culture

Price
$9.99

A plant that changes species when you submerge it. Hygrophila odora grows upright, hairy, lance-shaped leaves above water — and finely divided, hairless, almost feathery ones below it. The two forms look so unalike that photographs of the same plant are routinely mistaken for different species. This is the sterile Vitro Culture® format.

What You'll Receive

  • Sold as Tissue Culture plants in vitamin-rich gel
  • Bag size: Approx. 4 inches, yield many small plants
  • Tissue Culture Technology | 100% Free from Snail, Algae, Pathogen, and Bacteria plus Extended Shelf Life on all in Vitro Plants

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Hygrophila Afrika
  • Scientific nameHygrophila odora
  • Also known asHygrophila sp. 'Guinea', Hygrophila sp. 'Afrika'
  • Origin — West Africa: Guinea, Liberia, Senegal and Sierra Leone
  • Placement — Midground to background
  • Shipped size — Small tissue-cultured plantlets, roughly 1-2 in
  • Mature height — 8–16 in
  • Suits — 10 gallons and up
  • Growth rate — Medium

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner
  • Light — Medium. Stronger light keeps growth compact rather than stretched
  • CO₂ — Recommended, not required
  • Water — 68–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Substrate — Required. Nutrient substrate supports root development
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Grows emersed, which suits paludariums and ripariums
  • Propagation — Cuttings — trim and replant stems or lateral shoots

Grower's Notes

  • Watch phosphate specifically. This species is unusually sensitive to phosphate deficiency and shows it before other plants do — keep PO₄ at roughly 0.3 mg/L or above. If it stalls while everything else in the tank thrives, phosphate is the first thing to test.
  • The two leaf forms are the same plant. Emersed growth is hairy and lance-shaped; submerged growth is smooth and finely divided. Expect the arriving foliage to be replaced entirely as it converts.
  • Grown above water it is genuinely aromatic — the glandular hairs release a strong musky scent when handled. That trait disappears underwater.
  • Floating stems throw side shoots, which is a quick way to build stock before planting them out.
  • Emersed plants can flower light blue to purple, so it earns a place in a paludarium as well as an aquarium.

Notes

  • Photos shown are for reference only. Actual plants may vary in size, shape, or form depending on growth stage and conditions. While tissue culture eliminates most risks, we cannot guarantee plants will be entirely free of pests or that they will arrive fully submerged or emersed.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

Happy Shrimp

Plonked the slate into the tank, gently fluffed the moss a little with tweezers, and my shrimp went straight for it. It's been in there for a few days now, and it's still healthy, fluffy, and green, and making my shrimp very happy. Will definitely buy again.

As expected

They look nice and as expected. I ordered two, shown in the pictures. Don’t mind the white stuff, it is sand from my tank getting into the moss.

I received this about a week ago I haven’t had any problems for it, hitchhikers or anything
This said it was coming from California when it shipped, so given the time it took, I believe it came in rather lovely condition

Healthy Moss

The moss on the slate arrived in good time. It was packaged well also. I checked it for any "hitchikers" snails, etc. None found! It appears to be very healthy, and is growing after just a few days. I 'm glad I finally got this addition for my fish! They seem to Love It!

Perfect

They are perfect for my set up. I actually use it as a lawn because I have a moderate light set up (75 gal) and I can't grow hair grass. I let it grow about a inch night then trim it down. Looks great I plan on getting more to cover the empty space

I love this plant! I already have difformis in my tank, but they get so large, and i wanted something a bit more compact. These are lovely, even though they're still small, but I can't wait to see what they look like when they start getting taller. As always, great plants from Aquarium Plants Factory!

No assembly required !

The Java moss on a stone rectangle (I bought seven, for the front edge of the aquarium) fits neatly into place, and by next morning I had a delicate lacy hedge for foreground. Beautiful effect, beautiful plants.

Wish I would have got another one

I really like it very full and healthy looking. Was worried because mail got it late to me and it was very cold. I just let it get room temp and put it in and it looks great.

I need more moss!

I bought this thinking I wanted to use it as a ground option plant (because of the slate) but then I ended up placing them in the groves oh my Malaysian driftwood and it was so beautiful. The colors are so natural and the quality is superb. I’m relatively new to the hobby but this is the best Java miss I’ve come across.
