Ludwigia Brevipes (Needle Leaf Repens)

Red without the bulk. Ludwigia brevipes — Needle Leaf Repens — carries fine, narrow leaves rather than the broad ovals most Ludwigia grow, so a group reads as a soft red haze instead of a solid block. It arrives green from our nursery and colors up once submerged.

Grower’s Notes

• It ships green and that is correct. Nursery plants are grown emersed with green needle leaves. The red develops over several weeks after submersion — nothing has gone wrong in the first fortnight.
• Fine leaves give a different effect from the usual red stems. Use it where a broad-leaved Ludwigia would look heavy.
• Trim the tops and replant them; cuttings color faster than the stumps regrow.
• Plant stems individually an inch apart. Bunched, the lower stems shade out and drop leaves.
• Bushier than Ludwigia arcuata, which is the plant it is most often confused with — same fine leaves and orange-red color, but arcuata carries less foliage per stem.

Notes

• Ludwigia Brevipes ships in its emersed form with green leaves. Submersion and proper aquarium conditions will gradually trigger the transformation to red foliage. Patience during this transition is required.
• Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
