Creeping Jenny

Creeping Jenny does two jobs. Underwater it grows as a fast upright stem with round, coin-shaped leaves; at the pond margin it creeps across wet soil and throws golden-yellow flowers. Same plant, two completely different looks, depending on where you put it.

Grower's Notes

• It prefers cooler water than most stem plants. The metafield range tops out at 78°F for a reason — this is a temperate species. In a warm tropical tank it grows leggy and thin, which is why it does better in unheated tanks and ponds.
• Emersed growth needs to stay wet. If you are growing it above water at a pond edge, keep the soil consistently moist until roots establish. Let it dry once and it stops.
• Every node roots. Cut anywhere along a stem and both halves grow on. Six stems become a solid patch in a couple of months with nothing but scissors.
• The yellow flowers only come emersed. Submersed plants stay vegetative. If you want the flowering display, it has to be grown at or above the waterline.
• There is a golden form. We also carry Lysimachia nummularia 'Aurea', sold as Golden Creeping Jenny — same plant, chartreuse-yellow foliage.
