Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is one of the most iconic and widely used aquatic plants in the aquarium hobby. Native to Southeast Asia, this species is prized for its durability, versatility, and timeless beauty. With its long, arching green leaves and exceptional adaptability, Java Fern remains a staple for both beginner and professional aquascapes.
At Aquarium Plants Factory, our Java Fern is grown in its emersed form, allowing for strong rhizome development and healthy foliage prior to transitioning to submerged conditions. Once introduced into your aquarium, it naturally adapts and becomes a lush focal point or background plant, adding height, texture, and movement to your layout.
Java Fern is a true rhizome plant and should always be attached to driftwood, rock, or aquarium décor. Burying the rhizome in substrate may cause rot. It thrives under low to medium lighting, requires no CO₂, and is exceptionally low maintenance—making it ideal for both low-tech and high-tech aquariums.
Our Java Fern plants are shipped as loose, individual rhizome sections or leaves and are not connected as a single, bundled rhizome. This is completely normal and expected.
Java Fern is naturally fragile during harvest, and individual leaves often separate from the main rhizome when collected. This does not affect plant health, growth potential, or long-term success.
We intentionally do not tie Java Fern together using black cotton thread or string to make it appear as though the plant is growing as one mass. While commonly done elsewhere, this practice can:
By shipping Java Fern loose and untied, we ensure you receive healthier, stress-free plants that can be properly mounted and allowed to grow naturally in your aquarium.
Fresh, healthy Java Fern cultivated and prepared by Aquarium Plants Factory®, available in convenient planting formats:
Bare-Root Plants: Loose, individual Java Fern leaves or rhizome sections (not tied), approximately 6 leaves per order.
Rooted Bunched: Individual Java Fern plants gently bundled with foam and a plant weight for secure anchoring, approximately 6 leaves total.
Rooted Potted: Java Fern grown in rockwool and placed in a net pot for easy attachment and stable mounting, approximately 6 leaves per pot.
Photos are sample representations. Due to the natural growth and harvest process, Java Fern may arrive as individual leaves or rhizome pieces rather than a single connected cluster. This is normal and does not impact plant health or future growth.
Certain aquatic plants may be restricted or regulated in some U.S. states. Always check your local and state regulations before purchasing or introducing plants into natural waterways. Never release aquarium plants into the wild.

However, plants in tissue culture will be 100% free from pests, algae and never have been contacting with any aquarium.
