Myriophyllum Mattogrossense

Format: Fresh-cut Potted

Price
$19.99

Myriophyllum mattogrossense is one of the finest-textured background plants available — bright green feathery whorls on slender stems that move with the current. It fills a back wall faster than almost anything else, which is both the appeal and the thing to plan for.

What You'll Receive

Sold as loose fresh-cut plants, bunched plants, or potted plants:

  • Fresh-Cut Plants: Approximately 6 individual, loose-cut stems without root
  • Bunched Plants: Approximately 6 stems without root bundled with foam and a plant weight
  • Potted Plants: Approximately 6 stems without root potted in rockwool and net pot

  • Also known as — Green Milfoil, Brazilian Milfoil
  • Origin — Mato Grosso, Brazil

  • Mature height — 8-16 inches
  • Growth rate — Fast

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate
  • Light — Medium to high
  • CO₂ — Recommended
  • Water — 68-82°F, pH 6.0-7.0
  • Substrate — Nutrient-rich soil helps, but it feeds mainly from the water column
  • Growth habit — Amphibious stem
  • Propagation — Cuttings

Grower's Notes

  • It feeds from the water, not the substrate. Root tabs do little here. Consistent water column dosing — macros and iron — is what keeps the whorls dense and the green bright.
  • Low light makes it leggy, not dead. Under weak lighting the internodes stretch and the feathering thins out. That is a light problem, not a nutrient one.
  • Fast growth means it shades its neighbors. At eight to sixteen inches and growing quickly, it will overtop anything planted in front of it within weeks. Trim on a schedule rather than when it looks untidy.
  • Handle it gently — the foliage is brittle. Fine whorls shed easily when pulled through water or gravel. Plant stems individually with tweezers rather than pushing a bunch in by hand.
  • Trim and replant the tops. Lower stems go bare as the canopy thickens. Cutting the top few inches and replanting them keeps a background even and doubles your stem count.

Notes

  • Myriophyllum mattogrossense is a fast-growing plant that may require regular trimming to prevent shading other plants. Under low light, stems may become leggy.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
