Pogostemon Deccanensis (Pogostemon Erectus)

Format: Fresh-cut Potted

Price
$15.99

Miniature conifers in a planted tank. Pogostemon deccanensis — the Indian Star plant — packs fine needle-like leaves densely around upright stems, so each stem reads as a small pine rather than a leafy stalk. Planted in a group it gives vertical structure that no broad-leaved plant can.

What You’ll Receive

Enhance your aquarium with our versatile selection of high-quality aquatic plants, available in three convenient formats:

  • Fresh-Cut Plants: Includes approximately 6+ loose, fresh-cut stems without roots. Perfect for flexible planting arrangements.
  • Fresh-Cut Bunched: Approximately 6+ fresh-cut stems without roots, bundled with foam and a plant weight for easy placement.
  • Fresh-Cut Potted: About 6+ fresh-cut stems without roots, securely potted in a net pot with rockwool, ensuring stability and healthy growth.

  • Mature height — 10–20 in
  • Suits — 20 gallons and up

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate

  • CO₂ — Recommended
  • Water — 68–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard
  • Substrate — Required. Vigorous rooter — nutrient substrate or root tabs
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Grown emersed it produces violet flower spikes

Grower’s Notes

  • Why two names? The hobby sold this as Pogostemon erectus for years before it was correctly identified as P. deccanensis. Same plant, and you will still see both labels in shops.
  • Light controls the shape. Under medium-high light the needle clusters stay tight; under weak light the internodes stretch and it stops looking like a conifer.
  • Trim often. Cut shoots root readily when replanted — that's how a small portion becomes a background stand.
  • It roots hard and feeds at the roots. A nutrient substrate matters more here than for most stem plants.
  • Also available as sterile Pogostemon Deccanensis Vitro Culture for a pest-free start.

Pogostemon Deccanensis (Pogostemon Erectus) Growing Great!

i’ve had these a few weeks now and they have been steadily putting on growth in my modified walstad-style tank (tidal 35 filter, foxfarm ocean forest potting soil substrate-sand cap, twinstar 45b II at ~80% power, apologies-i don’t keep track of my parameters-but i use distilled water with shrimp mineral according to instructions to re-mineralize and easy green every couple weeks when i think of it because i have houseplants growing in there too.) i keep medaka and shrimp so bioload is modest. i’m very happy with this plant, i buy most of my plants from apf and generally have had good success.
