Dwarf Sagittaria Vitro Culture

Want a grass carpet without CO₂? Sagittaria subulata is the plant that gets most people there. It spreads by runners on its own, tolerates low light, and — unusually — changes height with your lighting: short and tight under bright light, taller and more ribbon-like in shade. That makes one plant do foreground or midground work depending where you put it. This is the sterile Vitro Culture® format.

Grower’s Notes

• Light controls height, not growth. If your Sag is running tall and floppy, it isn't sick — it's reaching. More light brings it down. This is the single most useful thing to know about the plant.
• It feeds at the roots. Without a nutrient substrate or root tabs, runners slow and new plantlets stay small.
• Runners travel where they like. Trim stray runners at the substrate to keep the carpet inside its boundary.
• Expect a pause after planting. Tissue-culture plantlets convert from emersed to submerged form over two to three weeks before they start running.
• Plant the plantlets in small clumps an inch apart rather than one big mass — they fill the gaps themselves and root faster in small groups.
