Care

Grower's Notes

• You will not know if it is hardy or tropical until it grows. That matters for winter: hardy lilies overwinter in the pond, tropicals must be lifted and stored. If you are in a cold region and cannot risk it, buy from the labeled Hardy Water Lilies listing instead.
• Six hours of direct sun is the requirement, not a suggestion. Shade is the most common reason a lily produces plenty of pads and no flowers.
• Plant the tuber with the crown exposed. Set it against the side of the pot at an angle with the growing tip clear of the soil, then cap with gravel. A buried crown rots.
• Use heavy clay or loam, not potting compost. Compost floats out and clouds the pond; clay holds nutrients where the roots can use them.
• Lower the pot gradually. Start where the leaves can reach the surface easily and move it deeper as it grows. Dropping a new tuber straight to full depth stalls it.

Planting Instructions for Water Lily

There are two main types of water lilies, tropical and hardy. The differences between tropical and hardy water lilies are a growing habit. Tropical water lilies don't do well in winter. Hardy water lilies, on the other hand, can tolerate the cold. Tropical water lilies tubers must be removed from the pond and stored in moist conditions to come back in the future years. In warm climates, they can remain in the pond.
