Anubias Supernova Vitro Culture

Anubias 'Supernova' is a rare heterophylla hybrid from the Aquatic Plant Center nursery in Thailand — long, lance-shaped leaves with a wavy edge and a hard, glossy surface. It has the scale of a large Anubias with a much finer outline than the broad-leaved forms.

Grower's Notes

• Never bury the rhizome. Attach the thick horizontal stem to wood or rock and leave it in open water. Buried, it rots — and Anubias grows far too slowly to replace what it loses.
• It is a large Anubias with a light footprint. At 8 to 14 inches it has the presence of a heterophylla, but the narrow wavy leaves do not block light the way a broad-leaved form does. That combination is the reason to choose it.
• Tissue culture starts small. Three young plants is not three mature specimens — expect a year or more before they reach full size. That is normal for the genus, not a fault of the format.
• Keep the light low. Slow growth means algae settles before the plant can outgrow it. The glossy leaf surface helps, but shaded positions still give the cleanest foliage.
• Divide with leaves attached. Cut the rhizome into pieces that each keep three or four leaves and their own roots. Smaller divisions survive but sit still for a very long time.
