Broad, arching, strap-like leaves in deep green. Echinodorus uruguayensis is the sword that behaves like a background plant rather than a centerpiece — long leaves that lean and overlap into a dense screen instead of a tight upright rosette.

Grower's Notes

• It arches rather than stands. Leaves reach around a foot long and four inches wide, and they lean outward instead of holding upright. Planted in a group of three the leaves overlap into a continuous screen — which is the reason to choose it over an upright sword for a background.
• It comes from cooler water than most swords. Uruguay and southern Brazil are subtropical, so this one is comfortable at the lower end of the range and is a sensible choice for an unheated or coolwater tank where tropical swords sulk.
• Feed it at the roots. Swords take almost everything from the substrate. Root tabs or aquasoil under the crown; liquid dosing alone gives short pale leaves.
• Plant the crown at substrate level, never below. Cover the roots and leave the growing point exposed — a buried crown rots from the center.
• It propagates from floral stalks, not runners. A settled plant sends up a stalk carrying plantlets. Leave each attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.
