Echinodorus uruguayensis is one of the older species in the hobby and one of the most variable — color runs from bottle green through reddish to nearly black depending on the form and the tank. - Propagation — Adventitious plantlets on aerial floral stalks
Grower's Notes
- Expect variation — that is the species, not a fault. Uruguayensis has been traded under several names and comes in several forms. Leaf color and width differ between plants, so the one you grow may not match the photograph. If you need a predictable color, buy a named cultivar instead.
- It arches rather than stands. Leaves lean outward instead of holding upright, so a group of three overlaps into a continuous screen — the reason to pick it over an upright sword for a background.
- It takes cooler water than most swords. Southeastern South America is subtropical, so this is a sensible choice for a lightly heated or coolwater tank where tropical swords sulk.
- Feed the roots. Root tabs or aquasoil under the crown; liquid dosing alone gives short pale leaves.
- Plant each crown at substrate level, never below, and space the plantlets out. It propagates from floral stalks, not runners — leave each plantlet attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots.
