Long, flexible, ribbon-like leaves that lean and overlap into a screen. Echinodorus uruguayensis is one of the older species in the hobby and one of the most variable — colour runs from bottle green through reddish to nearly black depending on the form and the tank. This is the sterile Vitro Culture® (tissue culture) format.

What You'll Receive

One 4-inch sealed Vitro Culture® bag containing healthy Echinodorus uruguayensis plantlets — ready to rinse, acclimate, and plant.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Uruguayensis Sword, also known as Uruguay Sword
  • Scientific nameEchinodorus uruguayensis
  • Also known asAquarius uruguayensis (a segregate genus used by some authorities)
  • Origin — Cooler, fast-flowing rivers of southeastern South America
  • Placement — Midground to background
  • Shipped size — 4-inch Vitro Culture® bag of small plantlets
  • Mature height — 10-16 inches
  • Suits — 20 gallons and up
  • Growth rate — Medium

Care

  • Difficulty — Beginner, provided you feed the roots
  • Light — Medium
  • CO₂ — Not required, though it fills out faster with it
  • Water — 68-82°F, pH 6.5-7.5. Comfortable at the cooler end of that range.
  • SubstrateRequired. Heavy root feeder — root tabs or aquasoil under the crown; iron in particular drives the red forms.
  • Growth habit — Amphibious rosette; also grows emersed, where rosettes stay smaller and more compact
  • Propagation — Adventitious plantlets on aerial floral stalks

Grower's Notes

  • Expect variation — that is the species, not a fault. Uruguayensis has been traded under several names and comes in several forms. Leaf colour and width differ between plants, so the one you grow may not match the photograph. If you need a predictable colour, buy a named cultivar instead.
  • It arches rather than stands. Leaves lean outward instead of holding upright, so a group of three overlaps into a continuous screen — the reason to pick it over an upright sword for a background.
  • It takes cooler water than most swords. Southeastern South America is subtropical, so this is a sensible choice for a lightly heated or coolwater tank where tropical swords sulk.
  • Feed the roots. Root tabs or aquasoil under the crown; liquid dosing alone gives short pale leaves.
  • Plant each crown at substrate level, never below, and space the plantlets out. It propagates from floral stalks, not runners — leave each plantlet attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots.

Prefer an established plant? See Echinodorus Uruguayensis as bare-root, bunched or potted.

They arrived in great condition

I just planted my plants in my aquarium a day ago and so far they’re doing good. They arrived in great condition, so I have high hopes that they’ll survive. My experience buying these plants have been very positive, and will be buying more plants from here for sure.
