Bolbitis Difformis | Bulk Pack

Fine, lace-like fronds on a plant that stays under six inches. Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis' — Mini Bolbitis — gives the texture of a full-size water fern at nano scale. This is the bulk pack, for covering a whole piece of hardscape or a bonsai tree at once.

What You'll Receive

Fresh, healthy Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis' cultivated and prepared by Aquarium Plants Factory®.

Each portion consists of approximately one bare-root plant with around 6 healthy leaves.

  • 5 Pack: 5 individual bare-root portions (approximately 6 leaves per portion)
  • 10 Pack: 10 individual bare-root portions (approximately 6 leaves per portion)
  • 20 Pack: 20 individual bare-root portions (approximately 6 leaves per portion)

For best results, attach each plant to driftwood or rocks with aquarium-safe glue or thread, allowing the rhizomes to naturally anchor over time.

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Mini Bolbitis, also known as Philippine Bolbitis, Lace Bolbitis
  • Scientific name — Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis'
  • Origin — Philippines
  • Placement — Foreground to midground, on wood or stone
  • Mature height — 3-6 inches
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate
  • Light — Low to medium. Bright light means algae on slow-growing fronds
  • CO₂ — Not required, though it fills out faster with it
  • Water — 72-82°F, pH 6.0-7.5
  • Substrate — Not required. Epiphyte — tie or glue the rhizome to hardscape and never bury it.
  • Growth habit — Amphibious; also suits high-humidity terrariums
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower's Notes

  • Buy coverage, do not wait for it. Mini Bolbitis is slow enough that filling a large piece of wood from one plant takes years. Twenty portions spread across the hardscape look established immediately — that is the whole case for the bulk pack.
  • Give it flow. This is a rheophyte from shaded Philippine streams, and moderate current keeps the fine fronds clean and moving. In still water detritus settles into the foliage and stays there.
  • Space the portions. Each rhizome needs water movement around it. Where rhizomes press together, debris collects and rot starts at the contact points.
  • Expect a transition. It is grown emersed, so some of the fronds it arrives with will die back as it converts to submerged growth. Leave it alone — new fronds follow.
  • Never bury the rhizome. Attach with cotton thread or a spot of gel glue; the roots grip the wood themselves within a couple of months.

Comparing our Bolbitis: the full-size African species is Bolbitis Heudelotii (8-14 in), and the parent species of this cultivar is Bolbitis Heteroclita (6-10 in).

Notes

Pictures are representative samples only. Live aquatic plants are natural products and may vary in size, color, and fullness depending on season and growing conditions. Bolbitis heteroclita 'Difformis' is commonly grown emersed and may experience a normal transition period as it adapts to submerged aquarium conditions.

Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
