Want a fern with real texture? Bolbitis heudelotii grows finely divided, almost translucent dark green fronds with a hammered surface — nothing else in a planted tank looks like it. It attaches to wood and stone rather than rooting in substrate, and it thrives in the kind of current most plants dislike.

What You’ll Receive

  • Sold as Bare-root plants, or Potted plants
  • Bare-root plants | approx. 6 leaf, bare-root, loose rhizome
  • Potted plants | approx. 6 leaf plant potted with rockwool and plastic net pot

Plant Profile

  • Common name — African Water Fern, Congo Fern
  • Scientific nameBolbitis heudelotii
  • Origin — Tropical West and Central Africa
  • Placement — Midground to background, on wood or stone
  • Mature height — 8–14 in
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate
  • Light — Low to medium. Bright light means algae on slow-growing fronds
  • CO₂ — Not required. It speeds growth but changes nothing else
  • Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5
  • Substrate — Not required. Attaches to hardscape and feeds from the water column
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Also grows emersed in paludariums
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower’s Notes

  • Never bury the rhizome. Tie or glue it to wood or stone with the rhizome fully exposed — buried in substrate it rots, and this is the usual way Bolbitis is lost.
  • Give it flow. This is a rheophyte from fast-running African streams, and it does visibly better in current than in still water. Placing it in the outflow path is one of the few reliable ways to speed it up.
  • It is genuinely slow. Expect a month or more before the first new frond appears, and do not move it while it settles — Bolbitis resents relocation more than most epiphytes.
  • Cooler suits it. At the top of its range growth slows further and fronds are more prone to browning at the edges.
  • Divide by cutting the rhizome with a blade, leaving several fronds and some root on each section.

New to attaching plants? Read our guide on how to attach epiphyte plants to driftwood and rock.

Notes

  • Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation. Frond size and colour vary with lighting, flow and nutrients.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

I had ordered plant from aquarium factory for several time and it is always fresh and healthy looking plant. For this bolbitis heudelotii, it also arrived fresh and healthy. I just wish it had a little bit more quantity so that I can cover the entire a rock for my 125 gallon tank. picture was taken after the plant was left in the quarantine tank for quiet a long time so it not as fresh as when I got it

Dissapointing

Plant arrived looking sad, dark grey coloration, no visible root system. Within two days in my tank it had totally melted away. All other plants are flourishing.

Great price on a healthy little plant.

Bolbitis heudelotii is a relatively pricy and slow growing plant, but the portions I got look great and were well worth it. The plants I get from APF always grow really well, so I’m looking forward to seeing this one fill in.
