Bolbitis Heudelotii Difformis

Emersed Growth: Bare-root Plants

Price
$12.99

Want the Bolbitis texture without the size? This compact 'Difformis' form grows finely dissected, ruffled fronds on a plant that stays well under a foot — the lacy structure of a full-size African Water Fern, in scale for a smaller tank.

What You’ll Receive

Available in three formats:

  • Bare-Root Plants: 4+ healthy fronds with rhizome, loose for flexible placement
  • Bunched Plants: 4+ fronds tied with foam and weight for easy setup
  • Potted Plants: 4+ fronds rooted in rockwool and net pot for secure anchoring

Plant Profile

  • Common name — Compact African Water Fern, also known as Dwarf Bolbitis
  • Scientific nameBolbitis heudelotii 'Difformis'
  • Placement — Midground, on wood or stone
  • Mature height — 4–8 in
  • Growth rate — Slow

Care

  • Difficulty — Intermediate
  • Light — Low to medium. High light encourages algae on slow-growing fronds
  • CO₂ — Not required, though it fills out faster with it
  • Water — 72–82°F · pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard
  • Substrate — Not required. Attaches to hardscape
  • Growth habit — Amphibious. Emersed growth needs high humidity
  • Propagation — Rhizome division

Grower’s Notes

  • Never bury the rhizome. Tie or glue it to wood or stone with the rhizome exposed — buried in substrate it rots, and that is how most Bolbitis is lost.
  • Give it gentle to moderate flow. Bolbitis are rheophytes and appreciate current, but this compact form dislikes heavy turbulence — steady rather than strong.
  • It is slow to establish. Expect several weeks before the first new frond, and avoid moving it while it settles.
  • Divide by cutting the rhizome between leaf clusters, leaving several fronds and some root on each section.
  • Pairs naturally with mosses, Anubias and Bucephalandra — all shade-tolerant epiphytes with the same care needs.

Comparing our Bolbitis: the full-size Bolbitis Heudelotii reaches 8–14 in, and Bolbitis Difformis (B. heteroclita) is the smallest at 3–6 in.

New to attaching plants? Read our guide on how to attach epiphyte plants to driftwood and rock.

Notes

  • As a slow-growing fern, this plant may take time to adjust and establish in new environments. Avoid burying the rhizome in substrate, as it may rot. Attach with thread or glue to wood or rock for best results.
  • Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.

What We Guarantee

24-Hour Live Arrival Guarantee — We guarantee that live plants and live aquatic animals will arrive alive. In the rare case of a Dead on Arrival (DOA), you must notify us within 24 hours of the delivery time recorded on the carrier's official tracking page. The guarantee is void after that 24-hour window, as condition can no longer be attributed to transit.

How to Submit a Claim

  1. Take at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the affected items in their original, unopened, sealed packaging, plus a photo of the shipping label on the box.
  2. Email your photos and order number to hello@aquariumplantsfactory.com within 24 hours of delivery.
  3. Do not photograph plants or animals after they have been unpacked, planted, or introduced to your aquarium — once an item enters your aquarium's ecosystem, it is no longer covered.

Approved claims are resolved with a replacement, store credit, or refund at our discretion, under the terms of our Refund Policy. Each item is eligible for one replacement only — replacements are final and we cannot replace a replacement.

Conditions That Void the Guarantee

  • Incorrect or incomplete shipping address (vacant address, missing apartment number, or any issue that prevents delivery)
  • Packages marked "invalid address," "undeliverable," refused, or returned to sender
  • Packages left unclaimed, held at a carrier facility at the customer's request, or not retrieved promptly after delivery — live goods must be brought indoors and unpacked the day they arrive
  • Carrier delays, weather events, or delivery exceptions once the package has left our facility
  • Shipments to freight forwarders or package-forwarding services

Providing accurate, complete shipping information and monitoring your tracking are essential to keeping your guarantee valid.

Please note: the Live Arrival Guarantee covers arrival only. We cannot guarantee ongoing success — aquarium environment, water quality, nutrients, temperature, lighting, filtration, and CO2 all affect long-term results.

What We Can't Guarantee

  1. Pest-free plants (potted & bare-root): Although our plants are grown in our own clean greenhouse, we cannot guarantee they are 100% free of snails, algae, or other hitchhikers. We recommend rinsing and quarantining all plants before adding them to your aquarium. Tissue culture (in vitro) plants are the exception — they are grown in sterile lab conditions, are 100% free of pests, algae, and disease, and have never been in contact with any aquarium.
  2. Pesticide-free plants: We use homemade, organic pest control in our greenhouse and never use copper-based pesticides, which are toxic to invertebrates such as snails, crabs, and shrimp. However, we cannot guarantee plants are entirely pesticide-free — always rinse and quarantine before use in invertebrate tanks.
  3. Your aquarium's success: We are not responsible for your aquarium inhabitants, including fish, shrimp, snails, and turtles. Please quarantine all plants before use.
  4. Growth form: Unless specified, we do not guarantee plants will grow emersed or submersed in your particular setup.

Please review your state's regulations on restricted plants, as we are committed to not shipping plants that are restricted in your area. Do not release any plants into the wild or waterways, as this can harm local ecosystems by introducing invasive species.

Your cooperation in protecting the environment is appreciated. For continuously updated information, refer to the USDA State Noxious Weed list here.

Thank you for your responsible commitment to environmental preservation.

Great plants

Very nice plants, lots ofsmall peices that make it easy to cover a lot of surface area. All plants survived - either reproducing at the rootstock or cloning new plants at the leaf surface. Plants were clearly grown immersed, as there was no die back or melt. Highly rec.

Hearty plant with awesome fronds

Love this plant. It reminds me of a tropical jungle. The plant arrived in excellent condition and hasn't shown any signs of wilt or damage. It's supposed to be a hearty plant so I don't expect any problems. Can't wait until my next aquarium arrives tomorrow so I can start my 2nd aquascape project. I'll be adding this to my driftwood and I think it's going to turn out quite nice. The plant came well packaged and in great condition. I'll be telling all my friends in the hobby to check out this company's plants. I'm definitely coming back again for my next order.

USPS not good

I would love to have my plants in my tank right now but haven’t received them yet. My last 2 orders have been great! I’m sure this order would have been too. USPS priority mail should have been here Thursday or Friday.

Stellar

Came in exactly as advertised! This particular plant is somewhat difficult to find due to people mixing up the species, so I was pleasantly surprised to get the correct one

Beautiful!

This plant is gorgeous and different than the java ferns and anubias that I already have for my goldfish tank. Fingers crossed that they don't try to eat it. It looks great! It was also hard to find, glad to have found it here.

Bolbitis Heudelotii (African Water Fern) typically reaches around 8-16 inches tall at maturity, making it a nice mid-ground to background plant depending on how it's attached and how much room it has to spread.
