Cryptocoryne Mioya Vitro Culture

Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Mioya' comes from a single river in Sri Lanka, and it looks it — red-brown leaves with a hammered, dimpled surface that catches light differently from the smooth-leaved wendtii forms. It also tolerates warm water better than almost any other crypt.

Grower's Notes

• It handles heat that other crypts resent. Mioya grows in streams that run above 30°C in the wild, which makes it one of the safer choices for a warm discus or betta tank where other Cryptocoryne struggle.
• Expect melt after planting. Tissue culture stock is grown emersed and sheds those leaves as it converts. Leave the roots alone — the crown pushes new submersed leaves within three to six weeks.
• The hammered texture develops with age. Young plantlets come out relatively smooth. The dimpled surface and deeper red-brown appear on mature leaves, so give it a few months before judging it.
• Root tabs, not liquid fertilizer. Crypts take almost everything through their roots. An enriched substrate under the crown is what produces full-size leaves rather than short pale ones.
• Let the runners fill in. Mioya spreads sideways from the parent rosette over time. Resist replanting — each disturbance resets the melt cycle.
