Grower’s Notes
- The pink is why it is difficult. Pink leaves carry far less chlorophyll than green ones, so this plant photosynthesizes less efficiently than any standard wendtii and has much less margin for poor light, unstable conditions or neglect. Treat it as an advanced plant regardless of how easy ordinary Crypt Wendtii is.
- Expect a heavy melt. All Crypts shed leaves on a change of conditions, and Pink Flamingo does it harder than most. Leave it alone for three to four weeks and let it rebuild from the roots — pulling it up is what turns a recoverable melt into a loss.
- Feed at the roots and don't move it. Crypts melt again every time they are relocated, and this one is slow enough that a second melt costs months.
- New growth often returns greener before the pink comes back. Judge the color once it has settled, not on the first leaves.

I bought two tissue cultures this time. It's been cold here, and they arrived in insulation but were still quite cold. They looked dark and a bit "mushy" in the package (wasn't the cup you normally think of) so I was a bit concerned. After putting them on the window sill for about 30 minute or so, the package warmed up and the plants seemed to revive.
After separating and cleaning the gel off, I managed to get six vibrant, fully healthy looking plants! They're in my aquariums now and seem to be adapting just fine. After three days, I see no melting to speak of, so these look like winners!!
