Care

• Difficulty — Beginner
• Light — Low to medium. Higher light brings out bronze tones but also invites algae on slow-growing blades.
• CO₂ — Not required, though it encourages fuller growth
• Water — 72-82°F, pH 6.5-7.5
• Substrate — Required. Root feeder — nutrient substrate or root tabs under the crown.
• Growth habit — Amphibious rosette; also grows emersed

Grower's Notes

• Broad leaves are efficient coverage. A single rosette fills the space several narrow-leaved crypts would need, which matters in a midground where you want mass rather than fine detail.
• Expect crypt melt, then leave it alone. Tissue culture plantlets shed their emersed leaves as they convert to submersed growth. The root crown is unharmed and pushes new growth — do not pull it out.
• Plant the crown at substrate level. Bury the roots and leave the growing point exposed. A buried crown rots from the center; planted too shallow, it floats free.
• Feed the roots. Crypts take almost everything from the substrate. Root tabs or aquasoil produce the broad, well-colored leaves; inert sand with liquid dosing gives short pale ones.
• Stop moving it. Every replant restarts the melt cycle. Pick the position before planting and let the runners fill in around it.
