The narrow-leaved Amazon Sword. Echinodorus amazonicus grows longer, slimmer blades than the broad-leaved bleheri and stays a little smaller with it — the sword to choose when you want height and movement at the back of a medium tank rather than a single dominating rosette.

Grower's Notes

• Narrower leaves, smaller footprint. Against Amazon Sword (E. bleheri), this one has slimmer blades and tops out lower. In a 20 to 40 gallon tank that difference is the whole decision — bleheri can swamp the layout where amazonicus fills it.
• It does not spread by runners. Swords propagate by throwing a tall floral stalk that carries plantlets along its length. Leave each plantlet attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free and plant it. Waiting for runners under the substrate will get you nothing.
• Feed it at the roots. In inert gravel without root tabs it yellows, thins and develops holes in the older leaves — the usual way a sword disappoints.
• Give it three inches of substrate depth, with the crown set at the surface and never below. The root mass is substantial and a shallow bed stunts it.
• Expect a transition. Grown emersed, so some arriving leaves die back as it converts to submerged growth. New leaves follow from the crown.
