Echinodorus Oriental

New leaves come in pink. Echinodorus 'Oriental' — a mutation of Echinodorus 'Rose' — pushes pink to reddish foliage from the crown that matures to green as it ages, so a healthy plant always carries color at the center and green at the edges.

Grower's Notes

• The color lives at the crown, not across the plant. Oriental is not a red sword — it is a green sword that produces pink new leaves. A mature specimen shows a pink center surrounded by green, and that contrast is the effect you are buying. If you want the whole plant red, buy Red Rubin instead.
• Emersed growth is green. Nursery plants are grown above water and arrive without the pink. It appears on submerged growth over the following weeks.
• Feed it at the roots. Swords take nearly all their nutrition from the substrate. Root tabs or aquasoil under the crown are what drive the steady flow of new leaves — and on this plant, new leaves are the color.
• Plant the crown at substrate level, never below. A buried crown rots from the center.
• It propagates from floral stalks, not runners. A settled plant sends up a stalk carrying plantlets. Leave each attached until it has four or five leaves and its own roots, then cut it free.

Notes

As with other Echinodorus, melting of older leaves may occur after planting due to transition from emersed to submerged growth. This is normal, and new healthy growth will adapt to your aquarium conditions.
