Hottonia Palustris Vitro Culture

A temperate plant in a tropical catalog. Hottonia palustris — Water Violet — grows soft feathery lime-green leaves in whorls that read almost like snowflakes along the stem. It is European rather than tropical, and it prefers water at the cooler end of the range, which makes it one of the few genuinely good stem plants for an unheated or lightly heated tank. Grower's Notes

• Keep it cool. This is a European species, not a tropical one. It performs best between 60 and 75°F and thins out in a warm discus or heavily heated tank. That makes it a useful choice for an unheated room-temperature aquarium, where most stem plants sulk.
• Trim to build the bush. Left alone it grows as single stems. Topping triggers branching, and repeated trimming is what produces the dense feathery clusters it is bought for.
• Rinse the gel off and separate the plantlets before planting, spacing them an inch apart. Fine whorled foliage shades itself when planted as a clump.
• Dose the water column. It takes most of what it needs through its foliage rather than its roots.
• The pale lime-green sits well against darker or broader-leaved plants — it reads as light rather than color, which is a different kind of contrast from a red stem.

Notes

• Appearance, size, and coloration may vary depending on growing conditions and season. Tissue culture plants may initially appear small but will quickly establish and grow once planted in aquarium conditions.
• Never release aquarium plants into natural waterways.
